Over the edge

Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon

Rachel Tracy

This is for discussing the book Over the Edge: Death in the Grand Canyon by Michael P. Ghiglieri and Thomas M. Myers.
Over the edge: Death in the Grand Canyon

The Foreword by Ken Phillips, Search and Rescue Ranger holds a chilling but accurate warning message.
"There are no new accidents, --only new people having the same old accidents."
Reports of fatal accidents in the wilderness areas of Arizona and Utah are very common, and often caused by careless behavior, or lack of good planning.  When it comes to the raw natural world, even the best, most seasoned, most experienced people can still be caught off guard and lose their lives.
  • Introduction:  Why A Book On Death?  pages 1-4
"Our intent in this book is ...to identify the kinds of mistakes and decision making which commonly kill people in the Grand Canyon.  By identifying these and sharing them, we may all be in a better position to avoid or prevent such lethal errors in the future."
This book is about fatalities in the Grand Canyon below the rims.

Paragraph discussing possible liabilities in writing this book.
Paragraph discussing experience, viability in authoring this book.

Ghiglieri was a ranger and a whitewater rafter.
Myers was a doctor in the Grand Canyon clinic for ten years.

To answer the "Why" question for the reason this book was written: So the lives and deaths of those who passed from this world in the Grand Canyon will not be in vain. The survival rate of those still living, who wish to visit the Grand Canyon, can be increased by knowing the circumstances of those deaths, and avoiding those conditions or decisions.
