Rope making
Fiber arts of all sorts depend on the basics of twisting loose fibers into strands, then twisting or braiding them into rope or yarn. The basic theory is the same for rope, yarn, thread or hair braiding. Many useful fibers exist besides hemp, cotton and wool. Some are more difficult to separate into useable resources, hence are not used as much because they require more effort. In ropemaking, ideally you would want to stick with the strongest, best fibers, but resourceful people will find ways to make rope and other useful items from unlikely sources.

Making Fires
People stranded must resort to older methods of heating, cooking, smelting etc. Current technology has all but eliminated skills that were once essential for all people to know. It is possible to survive without fires, but more comfortable and convenient with them.
