The bridge

On a bridge, eyes filled with tears
a desperate woman fought her fears
teetering on the edge
suspended between life and death.

On the railing she waited in despair
for courage to step out into the air
behind her cars moved steadily
indifferent to her tragedy.

And the drivers never stopped
to help the woman or to talk
to avert the choice she'd made
Some yelled "Jump" as they drove away.

The woman knew nobody cared.
and anguished courage found
threw herself into air
turned and twisted down
to a broken mass upon the ground...

A life gone, precious life, a waste.
A tragedy for the human race.
Because we too might feel hopeless enough one day
to throw ourselves away.

When we find ourselves up on that bridge
will anybody care a smidge?
