FIVE STARS

Five blue stars in a window. 

Gazing at five empty chairs, 

Feeling a Mother's heartache, 

Hearing a Mother's prayers. 

Each blue star means a loved one 

Gone to serve country and you. 

Each represents a banner 

Of red and white and blue. 

Sometimes a star turns to silver 

Pointing to foreign shores, 

Guiding a weary soldier 

Safe through the grimness of wars. 

Each star signifies loneliness, 

Sacrifice, bravery and fears, 

Hopes for a brighter future, 

Safety through coming years. 

Someday the stars will be memories, 

As each one, their stories have told, 

May they always be bright blue or silver 

And none ever change into gold.
